What the Ancient Greek Word for Church (Ἐκκλησία – Ecclesia Means

1 min read

The word for “Church” used in scripture is ἐκκλησία (ecclesia). It is derived from the ancient Greek verb ἐκκαλέω (eccaleo) which means to call and thus in general terms has to do with a gathering.
In Christian terms, it is the gathering of free and logical beings under the Saviour Christ which also includes the Holy Angels.
“Ἐν Ἐκκλησίαις εὐλογεῖτε τὸν Θεόν. In your gatherings, bless the Lord”
