Carrying the Work of the Diocese
Under the omophorion of the Right Reverend Bishop Philaretos of Pallini and Western Europe, the Sacred Monastery of St. John of the Ladder serves as both the Bishop’s Residence and the Administrative Center of the Diocese of Pallini and Western Europe.
A small monastic brotherhood carries the practical weight of the diocese:
Handling the complex legal, compliance, and administrative workload required to support multiple priests and diverse communities across Western Europe.
Carrying out this work voluntarily and at our own expense, without imposing mandatory financial assessments or quotas on our parishes and missions.
Making a four-hour round trip every Sunday, great feast, and pastoral occasion to serve, maintain, and keep the doors open at the Sacred Cathedral of St. Paraskevi in Gerakas.
Organizing pilgrimages, and translating previously untranslated Patristic texts into English.
The Realities We Face
Our monastery is entirely self-funded. Because of our stand for True Orthodoxy, we receive no state grants, no ecclesiastical subsidies, and none of the tax exemptions afforded to state-recognized religious bodies in Greece.
Before the Greek economic crisis, our brotherhood sustained itself by making and selling handmade prayer ropes, incense, and liturgical items. Today, covering basic living costs has become an uphill battle. We are fulfilling the duties of an entire diocese while struggling simply to pay heating bills, cover medical necessities, and keep food on the table.
What Your Offering Directly Supports:
Basic Living & Medical Expenses: Food, heating, utilities, and medical care for the brothers who labor here daily.
The Diocesan Administrative Center: Covering the real expenses of operating the diocesan office so our priests and their scattered flocks receive the administrative support they need.
The Sacred Cathedral of St. Paraskevi: Fuel for travel, repairs, utilities, and liturgical necessities to keep the cathedral active and served.
Monastery Upkeep: Structural maintenance and preservation of the Sacred Monastery of St. John of the Ladder.
Missionary & Pastoral Output: Continuing our educational outreach, and Patristic translation work.
