3D Ebook cover for the Life of St. Amator of Auxerre.

We are happy to announce the latest addition to our Orthodox Christian Treasury series: a new translation of The Life of St. Amator of Auxerre.

Many Orthodox Christians are familiar with St. Germanus of Auxerre, the great Wonderworker of the West. But fewer people know the story of his predecessor and selector, St. Amator.

St. Amator was the Bishop of Auxerre who famously confronted Germanus when he was still a nobleman in the world. In a divine act of holy zeal, St. Amator chopped down the “pear tree” where Germanus hung his hunting trophies—a physical uprooting of idolatry in the city which eventually led to Germanus becoming a bishop and saint.

Why a New Translation?

While academic translations of this life exist in various archives, they lack the life and warmth that can only be found in Orthodox translations.

Translated by the Brotherhood of the Sacred Monastery of St. John of the Ladder from the 1680 Acta Sanctorum, this edition is designed to be read by Orthodox Christians. It isn’t a dry history, or merely a curious look back in time, but rather an insight into the holiness of Orthodox Auxerre and Gaul (modern-day France) in the time of St. Amator.

What makes this edition different?

  • Orthodox Context: We have included extensive footnotes to help you identify the other saints and locations mentioned in the text.
  • Original Artwork: The ebook is illustrated with two original icons of St. Amator and three etchings inspired by his life and letters.
  • Beautiful Design: The PDF is formatted with elegant green borders in recognition of St. Amator as a Hierarch of the Orthodox Church, and distinct typography, making it beautiful to print or read on a tablet.

Two Formats in One Purchase

To make sure you can read it anywhere, your purchase includes the ebook in two formats:

  1. The “Illuminated” PDF: Best for printing or viewing the artwork in detail.
  2. A Reflowable EPUB: Perfect for reading on your iPhone, Kindle, or Android device.

All proceeds from this ebook go directly to supporting the monastery and our future publishing projects.
