True Orthodox Diocese of Western Europe

Russian True Orthodox Church (RTOC)

It is a rare and joyous occasion when a genuine treasure of our Orthodox Faith is brought out of obscurity and made available to the faithful. Today, we are thrilled to announce just such an event: the first-ever English publication of the lives of the Holy New Venerable-Martyrs Euthymios, Ignatios, and Akakios, sourced from an uncorrupted 19th-century Athonite text.

This new digital publication from the Orthodox Christian Treasury series at MonasteryOrthodoxIncense.com is not merely another book of saints’ lives. It is a powerful spiritual weapon and a profound statement of faith, offering a vital antidote to the spirit of ecumenism that troubles our times.

Why This Publication is Essential for True Orthodox Christians

In an age where saints’ lives are often abridged, sanitized, or re-interpreted through a modern lens, the value of a pure, unadulterated source cannot be overstated. The lives of these three saints have been meticulously translated from a rare 1862 Greek publication written on the Holy Mountain itself. This is the Faith as it was preserved and confessed, full of the spiritual power and uncompromising truth that is the hallmark of True Orthodoxy.

The confessional spirit of these New Martyrs, who willingly shed their blood rather than remain in communion with a false religion, speaks directly to our own struggle to remain steadfast in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Their story is our story.

Furthermore, the ebook contains a newly-composed Akathist Hymn to the three saints, written specifically for True Orthodox use. This is a living continuation of our tradition—a new prayer born from an ancient spirit, providing a powerful new tool for our spiritual arsenal.

The Saints: From the Abyss of Apostasy to the Glory of Martyrdom

What makes these saints such powerful intercessors for our time is the astonishing path they trod. Each began not in glory, but in the tragedy of denying Christ. Through fear, coercion, or youthful folly, they fell into the darkness of Islam.

Yet the grace of God did not abandon them. Their journey back from that abyss is one of the most moving testaments to the power of repentance in all of the lives of the saints. Fleeing to the Holy Mountain of Athos, they plunged themselves into the furnace of asceticism, seeking to wash away their denial with unceasing tears, thousands of prostrations, and a burning love for the Lord they had once forsaken.

When they were purified and prepared, they returned one by one to Constantinople, the heart of the Ottoman empire, to make their glorious confession:

  • Saint Euthymios, strengthened by a vision of the Theotokos, went before the vizier, trampled the turban of the Hagarenes, and called their prophet an antichrist before being beheaded on Palm Sunday. His sanctity was confirmed when, after death, his sacred head miraculously opened its eyes before the faithful.
  • Saint Ignatios, his heart set ablaze by the martyrdom of his friend, deemed it unfitting that Euthymios should rejoice without him in heaven. He hastened to the tribunal to “take back his word,” and after a bold confession, was hung upon the gallows, strangling the ancient serpent with the very rope of his martyrdom.
  • Saint Akakios, after overcoming cowardice and shame, followed his brethren. Having first preserved his chastity like Joseph the All-Comely, he made his courageous stand and was martyred by the sword, fulfilling his own prophecy that his relics would return to Athos in exactly thirty days.
